The night saw ‘The Icepick’, known for his work with a number of groups; Hijack, The Three Knights, Brother Movement & Bodysnatchers take the mic and perform for the first time in years.

The night started out with support from Track Side Burner’s own DJ 210 & DJ Philly running through the Boom Bap classics, Carpetface, billed for support on the night quickly took the mic to warm up the crowd.

Starting his set with the 1988 UK classic ‘I get Hyped’ from Trouble, Carpetface rode the rhythm effortlessly, commanding the stage with his old-school style of rhyming synonymous with groups like Demon Boyz and Gunshot.

With members of Hardnoise in the house, along with Hijack’s own DJ Supreme and HQ members, it was only right a tribute should be made. Carpetface had secretly taken Hardnoise’s classic ‘Untitled’ from 1990 and looped up his own version. Getting DJ AJ of Hardnoise to introduce the track, Carpetface proceeds to body his way to the end of his set, rhyming without missing a beat, a rare sight these days but also being as clear as day on the microphone.

After Carpetface having warmed up nicely for the main support, DJ Supreme & The Icepick take centre stage. Supreme opens his 20 minute solo set with the infamous ‘Scorpio’s View’ from the Dirty Harry soundtrack, most notably used for NWA’sApproach to Danger’, cutting over the top, Supreme teases the crowd with stabs of ‘In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida’ by the Incredible Bongo Band, a staple of UK Hip Hop along with their famous ‘Apache’ break beat.

Supreme proceeds to break into ‘guillotine’ mode, proving his title of Supreme. He performs his famous scratch routines from the Hijack days, the same routines that left DJ Q-Bert speechless more than a decade ago.

The crowd now appropriately prepared for such levels of hard-core carnage bear witness to The Icepick performing for the first time in 20 years in his home town of Brixton. Icepick, along with his fellow HQ Radio members; Grizzly, Shaka Shazam & Matt Chrome support his return to the stage.

Performing his classics such as ‘MC Killer’ and tracks off of their radio mixtape projects, The Icepick quickly gains the attention of the crowd and they respond in kind. Watching The Icepick perform, his energy and commanding stance was undeniable, the response from the crowd proved his title as MC.

Half way through the set, The Icepick and guests stop the show to make an announcement, they call the owner of the Chip Shop Mike, to come front and centre, Shaka Shazam and Icepick present Mike with a framed print from John Dyer’s UK Legends range of artwork, Shaka stating “It’s a great place here, but there’s one thing missing… and that’s some UK artists on these walls”. Receiving the framed print, Mike later promised to have it up on the wall soon.

As it was late, and of course as the main attraction had already performed, Pete Rock took the stage, from what we hear, he didn’t do a half bad job! Joking! – Pete always rocks the house; to have him play such an intimate venue in the heart of Brixton was a treat.
